We had a lecture about picture editing and picture researching today, followed by some exercises in finding illustrations in picture databases for various topics. For instance, one exercise was about finding a picture for the cover of one of three books. Of the three I chose Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”, and for the cover one of my suggestions was this picture, though I haven’t actually read the book, so I don’t know if Mephisto was that kind of pig … (the other suggestions mostly involved moody shots of windows with lots of contrast between light and shadow).

Anyway, when I had some time to spare, I searched for “driftwood” for fun. One of the pictures that came up was this one. And so, the word I had been searching for so long is … “flotsam”! (Sometimes “flodsam”, though it’s not really correct).
And I think you will all agree with me that this word makes a great title for a comic book. Well, maybe in combination with “jetsam” – “Flotsam and jetsam”? Um, right.

By the way, a book cover I’ve always wanted to design is something for a collection of Marina Tsvetayeva’s autobiographical childhood stories, including one where she describes how she was convinced that the Devil was madly in love with her, and was sitting in her sister’s room in the shape of a big grey dog, waiting for her. For the cover I would  use a picture of a blue or silver Thai ridgeback dog, which, I must say, look rather demonic, in a handsome way …
