In the place where this story is set, the sows and piglets of the villagers are kept in one big herd. They are taken to the forests to graze in the day, and brought back to the village in the evening. A young child (Ebba in this case) herds them. 
This is the way pigs were often kept in pre-industrial times. (Read about this kind of pigkeeping in early Gaelic culture!)
